Welcome to Mrs. Malaviya’s Math Class. This letter will provide you with a brief summary of this year’s requirements and the curriculum for Accelerated Math7 class. In addition you will find information regarding the testing and grading policies, as well as parent teacher communication options. Please be sure to review this information closely and let me know if you have any questions.

Accelerated Math 7 Curriculum
The curriculum we will be using is aligned with the California Common Core Standards from 7th and 8th grades (http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/) emphasizing the eight mathematical practices. Our common core math classes place a strong emphasis on real world math problems to help students be more interested in math, increase confidence in their abilities, and improve the quality and accuracy of their work. Accelerated Math7 is a fast-paced course designed to provide students with a solid foundation in essential concept understanding and prepare students for success in future math courses, specifically Algebra. The textbooks for this course are: Springboard Mathematics Course 2 and Course 3. Students will be receiving these consumables and are expected to bring one of them to class everyday with them. In addition, there will be handouts and other resources used to supplement the textbook throughout the school year.

The topics we will focus on this year will be operations involving rational and irrational numbers, exponents, roots, and scientific notations, expressions, equations including systems of linear equations, inequalities, ratios, rates, proportions, percents, linear relationships, probability, and geometry topics involving angle relationships, transformations, area, and volume.
The following units will be taught over the two semesters:
Unit 1: Number Systems (course 2)
Unit 3: Expressions and Equations (course 2)
 Unit 5: Equations (course 3)
 Unit 7: Geometry (course 3)

Unit 2: Numerical Relationships (course 3)
Unit 4: Ratio and Proportion (course 2)
Unit 6: Geometry (course 2)
Unit 8: Probability (course 2)
Materials to bring

Each student is expected to provide DAILY:
  • Student planner or composition book to record homework (school planner is available at student services)
  • A dedicated math composition book for notes, examples, practice, and investigations
  • At least two sharpened pencils or mechanical pencil with extra lead; eraser
  • 1” binder for math only with sections labeled: Homework, Handouts, Quiz/Test, Resources, Paper
  • Loose-leaf binder paper for homework assignments (wide / college ruled)
  • Black or Blue Pens to correct homework (no yellow) – (I will use red)
  • 2 Highlighters (different colors)
  • One or more dry-erase whiteboard marker(s) and a whiteboard eraser (an old rag or a sock would be fine too)
  • Box of tissues (optional donation for the classroom – we need these a lot, especially during cold season)
§  Students should keep all papers, graded or not, in their binders until I ask for them. No papers should be stored at home until the unit grade has been given.

Internet access with a standard browser would also be very useful for checking homework or grades.

Homework
Homework assignments are posted on the classroom homework board and also can be found on my blog page:            http://d9math2017.blogspot.com
  • Homework is assigned on most school days and is due at the BEGINNING of class on the next school day.
§  Homework must be done IN PENCIL. (Notes may be written in pen.)
  • Late homework is accepted but penalized at least 50% unless the student has an excused absence or had cleared it with me ahead of time. Make arrangements the day of return for missed quizzes or tests.
  • Students must put proper heading and title on all assignments: last name, first name, number (for math class), date, period, homework number, page numbers, and problem numbers.

Make-up Work:  Students who are absent are given one day for each missed day to make up work missed without penalty. Students should contact a buddy or see teacher for the assignment information. It is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to get the assignment from the board, teacher’s web page, a friend, or the teacher, complete it and hand it in within a reasonable time period. I will not remind them. If a student is absent for a long period, contact the attendance office, and all homework missed from all classes can be collected for parents to pick up. Test and Quiz make-ups must be arranged with me immediately after the student returns to school.
Extra Credit Work:  I include extra credit in some of my assignments, especially tests and quizzes. I DO NOT give special extra credit assignments or projects for the purpose of raising a student’s class grade.

Assessments
Tests and Quizzes make up the majority of the students’ grades so it is very important that students are fully prepared to take them. In addition to assessments that I create, students will take district performance assessments. Tests are based on homework assignments, class work and examples, and review problems that I assign prior to a test/quiz. Dates for taking tests and quizzes are usually given out several days in advance to give students adequate time to review and prepare.

There are NO retakes on tests and quizzes.

Grading Policy
Grades are based on Tests, Quizzes, Projects, Class Notes, Homework, Participation, and a final exam. Grades are determined by the accuracy of work. Presentation of work is stressed as well. Neatness matters. Your child's current grades can be viewed on Infinite Campus (contact the office to get your child’s id and password).
Students will earn weighted points in the following areas as shown:

  • Assessments (Final Exam, Tests, Quizzes)                                            65%
-       Final Exam                                                              15%
-       Skills based quizzes                                              10%
-       Concepts based tests and quizzes                     40%
  • Projects, Notebook and class work                                                        15%
  • Homework                                                                                                  15%
  • Participation                                                                                                5%

Cumulative average of 90-100%: A, 80-89%: B, 70-79%: C, 60-69%: D, below 60%: F.

TENTATIVE PLACEMENT POLICIES BRET HARTE MATH DEPT. 2017 – 2018

Advance Placement: Every spring our students are assessed to help determine their fall placement for the next school year.  Placement will be based on mastery of content using multiple data points including District Performance Based Assessments, previous year’s Smarter Balance Assessments, and other assessments.
